ABOUT DR. MIQUEL LEWIS

Transforming Lives Through Education and Public Service

MIQUEL'S ROOTS

Dr. Miquel Lewis is deeply committed to serving the youth of our city. He will bring this commitment and his decades of experience to Chicago’s elected school board.

Miquel Lewis was born and raised in the Englewood community of Chicago to Donald and Robin Lewis. As the eldest of three siblings, Miquel was entrusted with a profound sense of responsibility from a young age. This responsibility became even more pronounced as he grew up witnessing the devastating effects of the crack cocaine epidemic in his community, which deeply impacted many families and friends, and cemented Miquel's pathway to a life in service to people.

A CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE

After finding his footing, Miquel pursued a higher education, earning a degree in psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he also joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Miquel began his career working with adults with severe mental illness and young people adapting to independent living. Transitioning between professional opportunities, he continued to gain valuable experience as a counselor. During his time at the Jane Addams Hull House Association, he met a colleague who later became his wife. Encouraged by mentors, Miquel returned to graduate school, where he earned a master's and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology.

Miquel’s continued dedication to public service led him into a role as a probation officer, progressively climbing the ranks and eventually assuming leadership positions. Today, he serves as the acting director of the Juvenile Probation Court Services Department in Cook County’s Juvenile Justice System.

In this role, he spearheads the institution’s public safety initiatives while actively addressing the broader systemic challenges within our justice system. Miquel's commitment to equity is apparent in his leadership. His vision for an equitable justice system led to the implementation of the Committee on Results for Equity (C.O.R.E.), his Department's committee responsible for evaluating policies, programs, and practices through an equity lens. His commitment to amplifying parents' voice is realized in the Family Navigator roles that his Department brought on-line under his leadership.

Miquel was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education under Mayor Lightfoot’s administration in 2023. He also served on the Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund and as chairman of the board of directors for the NOBLE Network of Charter Schools. His service with the NOBLE board began as a parent appointee when his daughter was enrolled in one of its high schools. Miquel is deeply rooted in Chicago. He, a native southsider, and his wife, a native westsider, now call the Beverly community home.

Drawing upon decades of experience working in influential public institutions that impact thousands of young individuals, along with his personal experience raising three children through their educational journey, Miquel remains steadfast in his belief in the transformative power of education, and is committed to ensuring all children receive what they need to achieve their dreams.
